The composting process

The compost bin, once filled, contains quantities of living beings which take part in the compost formation process: bacteria, microbodies and invertebrates.

composting process

It is the fermentation which allows organic matters to be transformed by the microbodies. The content of the compost bin lives at the rhythm of the seasons and the important decrease of the temperatures during the wintry period makes these living beings working at a slower pace.

The compostable waste is from several categories :

  • the high-carbon waste: cutting, straw, barks, dead leaves, dry weeds, papers..
  •  the waste with strong content in nitrogen: kitchen waste, lawn …
  • the wet waste: lawn and kitchen waste….
  • the dry waste: branches, straw, papers.

To succeed in composting, it is important well to balance well the contribution in opposite categories:

  • the carbon products and the nitrogenous products and to create a balance between the dry materials and the wet ones.

This balance will make easier the process of decomposition of materials and will transform them into a quality compost.
